Day 3, week 2 recap

Hi everyone!

Megan here!

First off, I just want to thank you for your prayers for the sick team members. After a morning of rest for those who needed it, and a solid afternoon of more rest and quiet time, we were all able to take part in the team meeting this afternoon. As I write, everyone is working on VBS prep for tomorrow, so that is a huge praise item there!! However, please continue to pray for health for the team — both spiritually and physically, as we are presenting the gospel message tomorrow. The evil one does not want us to be at full force tomorrow, and we are getting more tired everyday as this VBS and the missions trip comes to a close in only three full days away.

Today was a very good day at VBS. Students seamlessly stepped into places where their friends were absent, and as a leader, I was so proud of everyone who did.

Since that was basically what our day consisted of, I'd like to give you a quick run through (and tour) of the main format of our days. Wake up is at a 7 am, so we have enough time to dig through our suitcases to find our VBS t-shirts, a skirt or caprees for girls, and pants for the guys. We also need to enough to time to go downstairs to the bathrooms to brush our teeth, wash our faces or shower. Breakfast closes at 7:45, and we usually meet as a team inside the church to pray in between 8:30 and 8:50.

This church is beautiful.

Around 9 a.m., kids begin to trickle in, where we then organize a few games of pato, pato ganzo or futbol. The beginning songs and skits begin at 9:30 a.m., and the first station ends at 10:30 a.m., where the kids have lunch. (Yes, lunch at 10:30 a.m. ... the team has granola bars.)

The courtyard where we welcome kids and play games with them.
After that, we have two more half-hour stations where the kids rotate between games, crafts and drama.

Crafts in the courtyard by the side of the church!

The day of VBS usually ends around 12:30 p.m. Anywhere between then and 2 p.m., we have lunch, which is always prepared by the locals.

An example of a classic Mexican meal — hand cut bacon/meat, green chile morron (not spicy), queso (cheese), rice and a choice of guacamole and/or HOT red sauce. (AMAZING!!)

After lunch, there are three people who wash the dishes (we take turns with this job), which involve taking the dishes in a large Tupperware container to the sink downstairs and outside to wash, rinse and dry.

Before supper (which takes place anywhere between 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m.), we have a team meeting, quiet time and free time. These can go in any order, depending on the day. For example, immediately after lunch today, we crashed until almost 5 p.m. to give people a chance to rest. Other days, we'll have a team meeting right after lunch, with free time and solo time after we're finished. Team meetings include prayers, debrief from the day, and planning and prepping for the following day. This week has had significantly less planning than last week, because it is the second time we have done this VBS. For solo time, we can either sleep, pray, journal or read our Bibles. Sometimes siestas (sleep/rest) is mandatory. ;) Free time is spent doing whatever we want, including playing futbol in the courtyard, reading, playing dutch blitz, laying out in the sun, or going to the corner store. The corner store is very close to the church, and there is pop, ice cream, crackers, cookies, chips, fruit, yogurt and anything you can imagine, for extremely cheap. For example, a 600mL bottle of pop is 8 pesos, which is less than 75 cents Canadian!

Playing futbol! Or, hit Oscar with the soccer ball.

After supper (which is made by our amazing food lady Clara, and usually consists of sandwiches or pasta — yesterday we ordered in pizza!!!!! [extra exclamation marks brought to you by a very excited Sam]), we have a combination of dish washing, free time and a team meeting before bed. The team meeting in the evening always has worship and prayer, and we've done a bunch of different things during that time as well. We have written out encouragement notes to each other, talked about how God is working in our lives, or listened to Dave, Terry or Kyle give us a talk to either challenge us, encourage us or give us insight and wisdom.

I have come to love the "schedule" of our time here. There are times to talk with our accountability partners, laugh with the locals and each other, or just spend some time by ourselves.

I will include a mass post tomorrow with more people's answers to my question about their experience in Mexico!

Until then, hasta luego!

  1. Great post Megan! It’s awesome for everyone to have a picture of what life is like on the Missions Trip.

You’ve all been steadily in my prayers today. I was awake a lot last night in the night and spent a good hour praying over all of you. I know that God will accomplish His purposes in you and in the children and families these next few days. I’m trusting God to do a mighty work in each of you...and there at the VBS. I have been praying for restoration for all of you who are feeling sick. And trusting that God will even use THIS to teach each of you something significant.

Miss you Emily. You’ve been in my thoughts a lot.

Lyndi I hope your voice is returning. The rest of our tree split in a storm. Two summers in a row! I believe this tree has met its end :(

Dave - are you doing what I told you to do in your letter? :) I’m not there but know that I’m proud of you and what you’re doing.

Terry I miss you. Much love.

Hugs to all of you, eat some limon chips for me would you?

Alright more words for the rest of you another day!

  3. Hi Ty and the M3 team..nice to see all the pictures of your adventures in Mexico City! So much to see and experience. Can hardly wait to hear the stories in person.
We continue to pray for you in many ways - for rest, for health, for God's leading and for safety. We know God is doing great things through you and your work with all the children attending VBS. And we know God is using you in ways beyond what you ever imagined. What a great chapter to have in your life journey. Ty, remember to bring home some tasty treats to share (limon chips perhaps) and some good hot sauce if you can. We love you and miss you. Enjoy every moment! See you in a few...Kendal, Colette, and Zach

  6. Man, I just wrote a long message... but somehow it has been taken away. Let's try this again.

I am so thrilled to hear about how the Lord is working through you all and in you all and how He is meeting you and the kids in Mexico. How cool is Jesus? I love how much you all love him and I am continually praying that you could see His heart gushing over every single one of you! I'm excited to see where this trip will take you all in your faith journeys. Mexico has a special place in my heart and I know it will have a special place in yours.

Clara, so proud of you for heading up the food. You are such a talented cook and I wish I was down there to enjoy the Mexican culture and food with you as well as your own food. Can't wait for you to come back home and go to Duchess with you!

Lyndi, I'm so excited to hear about how VBS is turning out. You have put so much work into it and I'm proud of you for all the hard work you and the team have done. Way to go girl!

Emily, I can't wait to hear about this trip from you. It looks like you are all having a great time and I have been praying for rest for all of you. I, like your mother, miss you as well.

Megan, I love seeing Mexico through your eyes! You have such a gift for photography and it has been a real joy to experience it through your lens. Thank you for your hard work!

I am praying for all of you in your remanding time there and cannot wait to welcome you home! To God be the GLORY!

    Love, Jenna Jo

  7. Many thanks to you Megan, for all your superb reporting on the blog and making us feel we're all in Mexico together! A most amazing blog and one with many memories!
Our prayers for continued health and God's protection on all of you as you finish your mission with the children and return home. My prayer is that all of you continue to experience God's Love and faithfulness as each one returns to their lives back home, & now live as changed for God's Glory. Megan, I have one request or thought: Would it be possible to put each day of this blog and all the photos you've taken from leaving Edmonton and back home again, onto a CD for each of the team members and their families? Just a thought and a remarkable memory for all the team members!! Thanks, Hugs & Love to you all esp, Jen (your mom, dad & Jac)
